Thailand Visa Extension in Pattaya (2026): Requirements, Documents & How to Apply

A practical 2026 guide to tourist stay extensions in Pattaya, covering eligibility, TM.7 documents, immigration fees, application steps and overstay risks.

Extending a tourist stay in Pattaya

Visitors who want to remain in Thailand beyond their current permitted stay may be able to apply for an extension at the immigration office responsible for their address. Eligibility and the period that may be granted depend on how the person entered Thailand, nationality, passport, immigration history and the reason for requesting more time.

An extension is never automatic. The Immigration Bureau checks the application and the authorized officer makes the decision. Before preparing an application, first identify the entry category and the exact date shown on the latest immigration permission stamp.

Visa validity, permission to stay and extension: what is the difference?

These three terms are often confused, but they are not interchangeable.

Visa validity

Visa validity is the period during which a visa may be used to seek entry into Thailand. An “enter before” or “valid until” date is not normally the date on which a visitor must leave after being admitted.

Permission to stay

Permission to stay is the period granted by the immigration officer when the traveller enters Thailand. The passport entry stamp—or the corresponding official immigration record—shows the date through which the visitor is permitted to remain.

Extension of stay

An extension is a new request made to the Immigration Bureau for permission to remain beyond the current permitted-stay date. It does not extend the validity of an already-used visa and approval remains at the officer’s discretion.

Always work from the latest permitted-stay date. Do not calculate the deadline solely from the date printed on an e-Visa, visa sticker, flight ticket or hotel booking.

Common tourist extension situations

Tourist Visa entry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that a Tourist Visa generally permits a stay of up to 60 days per entry and provides an opportunity to apply for an additional extension of up to 30 days at immigration. The actual period granted is determined by Immigration.

Visa-exemption entry

Thailand revised its visa-exemption and Visa on Arrival arrangements effective 15 September 2026. A person admitted without obtaining a visa in advance must check the current scheme applying to their passport and entry date. Some visa-exempt visitors may be eligible to request an extension, but nationality and the terms of the applicable scheme matter.

Do not assume that an older 60-day exemption rule still applies. Visitors who entered before a rule change should use the permitted-stay date recorded by Immigration and confirm whether their entry category can be extended.

Visa on Arrival and nationality-specific arrangements

Visa on Arrival is different from visa exemption and from a Tourist Visa obtained before travel. Extension rights may be limited. Bilateral agreements and nationality-specific rules can also produce different results, including shorter periods. These cases should be checked individually before filing.

Exceptional reasons

Medical treatment, court proceedings, family circumstances or disruption preventing departure may fall under separate extension grounds with different evidence. They should not be treated as routine tourist extensions.

Basic eligibility checks

Before applying, confirm that:

  • the passport is valid and in usable condition;
  • the current permission to stay has not expired;
  • the applicant’s entry category permits an extension request;
  • the applicant is residing in the area served by the immigration office being contacted;
  • the accommodation information and any required residence notification are current; and
  • the purpose and documents are accurate and consistent.

Nationality, prior extensions, entry history and special conditions can affect eligibility. A previous approval does not guarantee that another application will be approved.

Documents commonly required

The Immigration Bureau’s public handbook for tourism-purpose extensions identifies the core application as an extension request under section 2.4. Common documents include:

  • the original passport and copies of relevant passport pages;
  • completed Form TM.7;
  • a recent photograph attached to the application;
  • the acknowledgement concerning penalties for overstay; and
  • the official immigration application fee.

The local office may also request copies of the latest entry stamp, visa or entry evidence, accommodation details, TM30 information, address evidence or other supporting documents relevant to the case. The exact checklist should be confirmed before attending because local document practices and individual circumstances can differ.

Bring originals as well as properly prepared copies. Names, passport numbers, dates and addresses should match across every document.

How to apply in Pattaya

1. Check the permitted-stay date

Locate the latest immigration stamp or official entry record and note the date through which stay is permitted. If the record is unclear or appears incorrect, seek clarification immediately.

2. Confirm the correct extension category

Determine whether the person entered with a Tourist Visa, visa exemption, Visa on Arrival or another category. This affects eligibility and the possible extension period.

3. Prepare the application

Complete Form TM.7, prepare the photograph, passport copies and address-related evidence, and check any additional requirements of the responsible immigration office.

4. Apply before the current stay expires

The application should be made while the applicant still has valid permission to stay. Do not wait until the final day: public holidays, incomplete documents, travel, technical issues or a request for more evidence can create avoidable risk.

5. Attend the responsible immigration office

The Immigration Bureau handbook says an applicant must contact the immigration checkpoint responsible for the area where the applicant resides. Personal attendance may be required. Thailand also offers an e-Extension system for selected categories, but applicants must verify whether their category and location are currently supported and comply with any required appointment or in-person verification.

6. Check the result and new date

After the passport is returned, check the new stamp, conditions and permitted-stay date before leaving the office. Keep the receipt and relevant documents.

When should you apply?

Apply before the permitted-stay date expires and allow enough time to correct missing or inconsistent documents. This guide does not state a universal number of days in advance because office acceptance practices and personal circumstances may vary.

Applying early does not mean that extra days are automatically added from the application date. The officer determines the permitted period under the applicable rules. Confirm current practice with the responsible office before filing.

Immigration fee and Buddy Visa service fee

The Immigration Bureau’s public handbook lists the government fee for a standard extension-of-stay application as THB 1,900. This is an official immigration fee.

Any Buddy Visa assistance fee is separate and may cover services such as checking eligibility, reviewing documents, preparing the application and coordinating the visit. No Buddy Visa service price is displayed in this article because it requires a separate case review and owner-approved quotation.

Payment of an immigration fee or a service fee does not guarantee approval. The Thai immigration authority makes the decision.

Overstay risks

Overstay begins when a person remains in Thailand after the permitted-stay date without lawful permission. It is not corrected simply by booking an appointment or preparing an extension application.

Immigration Bureau guidance states that a voluntary overstay of less than 90 days is subject to a fine of THB 500 per day, up to THB 20,000. Longer overstays can lead to re-entry bans. Arrest or other enforcement circumstances can have more serious consequences, and the Immigration Act also provides criminal penalties.

Do not plan to overstay as a substitute for an extension. Anyone whose permission has already expired should obtain qualified advice and contact Immigration promptly rather than relying on general online guidance.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the visa’s “valid until” date with the permitted-stay date.
  • Assuming that every nationality receives the same extension.
  • Relying on an older visa-exemption rule after the September 2026 changes.
  • Applying at an office that is not responsible for the applicant’s residence.
  • Waiting until the final permitted day.
  • Bringing an incomplete TM.7, unsuitable photograph or missing passport copies.
  • Using accommodation information that does not match residence records.
  • Assuming payment guarantees approval.
  • Booking non-refundable travel based on an expected extension before it is granted.
  • Remaining after the permitted date while waiting to “sort it out later.”

Frequently asked questions

Can a Tourist Visa be extended by 30 days?

Official Ministry of Foreign Affairs guidance states that a Tourist Visa allows the holder to request an additional extension of up to 30 days. Approval and the period granted are determined by Immigration.

Can a visa-exempt stay be extended?

Some visa-exempt visitors may be eligible, but the answer depends on nationality, entry date and the specific exemption arrangement. Thailand changed its exemption schemes on 15 September 2026, so current rules must be checked.

Must I apply in Pattaya?

The Immigration Bureau directs applicants to the immigration office responsible for the area where they reside. A visitor residing in the Pattaya area should confirm the responsible Chonburi office and its current procedures.

Does the extension allow me to work?

No. A tourism-based permission or extension does not provide authorization to work in Thailand.

Practical advice before visiting Immigration
